A group of about 50 refugees broke through the border defenses in Belarus and entered the Poland near the village of Starzyna, Polish police said Sunday (14), as the situation at the border between the countries becomes increasingly tense.
Thousands of people traveled to Belarus in hopes of crossing into the European Union, only to find themselves stranded at the border and experiencing extremely low temperatures.
The European Union accuses Minsk of orchestrating the crisis to pressure the bloc over sanctions it has imposed, but Belarus has repeatedly denied it. Some countries in the region have warned that the stalemate could escalate and lead to military conflict.
“Yesterday, before 5 pm, about 50 people invaded Poland near Starzyna,” Podlaska police said on Twitter, adding that 22 Iraqi citizens were later arrested.
Police also said they were attacked on Saturday night (13) during a separate attempt to refugees to push through the border, with a policeman’s helmet being damaged after a rock was thrown at him.
In total, the Polish Border Guard said there were 223 attempts to illegally cross the border on Saturday.
