Refugees living in Brazil have difficulties in regularizing documentation

Legal guidance on issues such as marriage and divorce, alimony, child custody, child registration, in addition to demands such as access to health care, education, the right to housing, are among the main needs of refugees living in Brazil today.

A survey released by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security in June this year identified 60,000 refugees living in Brazil.

In 2021, the Public Defender of the State of Rio de Janeiro released a survey on the flow of migrants in Caxias and published a Spanish version of the booklet “Refugees and Refugees in Brazil”.

This Thursday (11), the organization carried out a social action aimed at refugees and asylum seekers in Brazil. Defender Gislaine Kepe, who coordinates this work, said that these people face a set of difficulties.

“It’s the lack of access to services, the difficulty of communicating in Portuguese. They still don’t have this knowledge of our language. There is a lack of documentation because many refugees leave their country with only the clothes on their back”, explained defender Gislaine Kepe.

Venezuelans, Colombians and Africans

Most of the scheduled appointments were from Venezuelans, Africans and Colombians. At least 45 people requested assistance for this Thursday. One of them was the Venezuelan Francheslis Jaramillo who arrived in Brazil four months ago.

“I’m pregnant and I don’t have a job. I’m at my sister-in-law’s house and I came here looking for help,” she explained.

Ken Ukpabi, on the other hand, came from Sierra Leone, in 1999, and is trying to make the marriage official. He has 2 children like a Brazilian, but because he doesn’t have a birth certificate, he couldn’t get the marriage certificate.

“This official marriage is very important for my wife and for me too. We are already living this entire period without this formalization. I have an 18-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son.”

The event, organized by the Nucleus for the Defense of Human Rights in partnership with Cáritas Archdiocesana of Rio de Janeiro, was held at the headquarters of Cáritas.
