US President Joe Biden said today that his country’s relations with Vietnam have “entered a new stage”.
Speaking at a business forum during an official visit to the South Asian country, Biden said the two countries are deepening their cooperation in cloud computing, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Vietnam and the US also warned today in a joint statement against “threats or the use of force” in the South China Sea, a message that, as AFP points out, is clearly aimed at Beijing on the occasion of the visit President Biden in Hanoi.
The US is “committed to continuing to support Vietnam’s development of its autonomous defense capabilities,” according to the text, which is signed by US President and Vietnamese Communist Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong.
It is not possible in the announcement however, no explicit reference to China.
Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a shipping zone that is a vital artery for global trade, despite rival claims by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.
This causes persistent tensions and very frequent episodes.
The joint statement, which was released on the second day of the US president’s visit to Vietnam, also referred to “freedom of navigation and overflight” as well as the need to guarantee trade transactions “without coercion”, as and “respect for sovereignty” in this region, which has become one of the most tense zones on the planet.
Last Friday, for example, the Philippines condemned “illegal” actions by Chinese ships in the South China Sea.
Joe Biden said yesterday, Sunday, that he does not want to “restrict” or “isolate” Beijing, but his weekend participation in the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in India, as well as his visit to Vietnam, they aim to make a show of force at China’s doorstep.
The US president wants to offer Asian countries his strategic support against Chinese ambitions.
He also wants to showcase to Vietnam and elsewhere in the region the industrial opportunities offered by the US at a time when Beijing is facing economic difficulties.
