Relatives of victims of the subway accident in Mexico are seeking justice

The relatives of the victims demand justice of the accident in the subway of Mexico City, from which 25 people lost their lives, blaming the authorities for negligence, while the funerals continue, three days after the tragedy.

In many cemeteries in Mexico City, one request was on everyone’s lips: to find the causes of the accident and to punish those responsible, as broadcast by AMPE.

“Authorities are responsible” said Luis Dias, who buried his 39-year-old father, who on the day of the accident had taken subway line 12 while traveling normally by bus.

“It was not just us who were affected and other people who lost family members, many people were injured,” said Louis, 17, who appeared determined to seek redress from the authorities. About 80 people were injured in the accident.

“Justice for my mother,” said Luis Hernandez, who emphasized that his father, a 61-year-old engineer who was killed in the crash, was supporting the family.

The man was in one of the two subway cars that dived into space when the bridge collapsed.

The president promised justice

Its president Mexico Manuel Lopez Obrador reassured yesterday that justice would be done.

“Our condolences to the families of those killed. “Investigations have already begun to identify the causes of the accident and to punish those responsible,” he stressed.

The investigations are being carried out by the local authorities and the Norwegian company Det Norske Veritas.

The company will “analyze the deeper causes” that led to the collapse of the bridge through which the rails of line 12 of the metro pass, the mayor of the Mexican capital Claudia Seinbaum explained yesterday.

The construction of metro line 12 was marked by scandals as the original project budget was exceeded and many technical errors were observed.

The non-governmental organization “Mexicans against corruption” denounces the austerity policy promoted by Lopez Obrador, which, according to her, is responsible for 8.7% cuts in the metro budget.

The capital’s finance minister denies this, stressing that the budget has been reduced due to the reduction in the number of passengers due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to him, in 2020 the number of subway passengers decreased by 40%.

Earthquake

Seinbaum and Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, potential candidates for the ruling party in the 2024 presidential election, are at the center of criticism.

Line 12 was built and inaugurated when Ebrard was mayor of Mexico City (2012-2018).

He said he was ready to answer any question during the investigation, but stressed that his responsibility for the project ended when his term ended.

“We know that the first signs of problems in the elevated part of the line appeared after the earthquake of 2017,” Ebrard commented, referring to the earthquake that killed 370 people, mainly in the Mexican capital.

Meanwhile, demonstrations took place yesterday in solidarity with the victims and demanding “justice, clarification of the facts, end to corruption and safe public transport”.
