Religious intolerance in Brazil has grown by more than 80%, says study

THE Brazil recorded 3,853 violations motivated by religious intolerance in 2024, an increase of more than 80% in relation to 2023, which had 2,128 cases, according to data from the reporting channel of the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC), Disque100.

The city of São Paulo leads the number of cases with 919 violations in 2024, a growth of approximately 60% compared to 2023 with 573 occurring.

THE Rio de Janeiro came in second place with 764 violations and Bahia in third place with 223 violations related to religion or belief. Both states saw an increase compared to 2023.

THE The religion that recorded the highest number of violations was Umbanda, followed by Candomblé. Both religions of African origin.

THE number of violations of both beliefs more than doubled from 2023 to 2024, with Candomblé recording 214 violations in the last year and 58 violations in the previous year. Umbanda had 84 cases in 2023 and 234 occurred in 2024.

You evangelicals also appear prominently when it comes to religious intolerance, there were 111 records in 2024, an increase of more than 50 occurrences compared to 2023.

In 2025, 178 violations have already been recorded 60 of them in the state of São Paulo, followed by Rio de Janeiro with 21 cases and Bahia with 19 incidents, Candomblé and Umbanda have already registered 20 violations of a religious nature.
