The end of August does not promise such high-profile premieres as “Suicide Squad” or “The Main Hero”, but it still has a couple of cards up its sleeve. For example, a fantasy film with Hugh Jackman, where the main character can view other people’s memories. Or a fantastic French film about the last days of the Earth, which is approaching the Red Moon. Also, viewers will see a surreal story about the journey of the knight of the Round Table Sir Gawain and the restart-continuation of the cult horror film Candyman.
Reminiscence
One of the main characters in the last week of August in cinemas in Russia will be the film “Memories” with Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson in the lead roles. The producer, screenwriter and director of the project is Lisa Joy (one of the creators of the hit series “Westworld”). This will be her debut feature film. It will be interesting to see how Joy performs within the two-hour narrative. On paper, the film offers the viewer an interesting mix of fiction, melodrama and detective story in one bottle.
In the near future, Miami is almost completely submerged due to global warming. Lone veteran Nick Bannister makes his living with a fantastic device, offering his clients the opportunity to relive any memories they desire. You can even specifically look for the right moments in your memory so that a person remembers something important. However, his life changes when a girl named May appears on the doorstep of his office. Their romance is rapidly spinning, but one day she disappears without a trace. Now Bannister is forced to plunge into the dark world of the past to uncover the truth about the woman he fell in love with.
The Green Knight

Also on August 26, the film “The Legend of the Green Knight” with Dev Patel and Alicia Vikander in the lead roles is released in Russia. This is a free adaptation of a 14th century chivalric novel by an unknown English author, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The film was produced by indie studio A24, responsible for the Oscar-winning Moonlight and the surreal Lighthouse. The Legend of the Green Knight will be closer to the latter. At least critics point out that the plot in this film is not the main thing. At the same time, ratings and reviews are at a high level. The work of the operator and the costume designer is especially distinguished.
King Arthur celebrates Christmas in Camelot surrounded by his court and loyal knights. The feast goes on as usual, the courtiers share stories about their achievements, when suddenly the mysterious Green Knight arrives at the castle. He summons any of those present to strike him with just one blow in order to receive the same blow in response exactly one year later. Sir Gawain, heir to King Arthur and knight of the Round Table, takes the challenge without hesitation and blows off the head of the Green Knight in a big way. Imagine his surprise when the body raised its head, which reminded young Gawain of the agreement. A year later, the heir to the throne embarks on the most mysterious and dangerous journey in life.
Candyman

In 1992, the adaptation of Clive Barker’s short story “Forbidden” became one of the iconic horror films of its era. Naturally, on the wave of success, the studio managed to make several sequels, but they were not successful. And now, almost 30 years later, a soft restart of the Candyman franchise comes out. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II played the role of Anthony McCoy, who was just a child at the time of the events of the original tape. Thus, the film, although it will become a sequel to the horror of Bernard Rose, will actually tell a separate story.
Over the course of 30 years, Chicago’s African American neighborhood, Cabrini Green, has morphed from a dysfunctional to a refined youth neighborhood. However, stories about Candyman, a maniac who kills his victims, appearing to them from the mirror at night, continue to haunt the minds of its inhabitants. Photographer Anthony McCoy, obsessed with the idea of getting to the truth of urban legends, does not even suspect that he himself witnessed the phenomenon of Candyman as a child. Most likely, the film will have a pronounced socio-political overtones, because the script was written by Jordan Peele, an ardent fighter for the rights of African Americans in cinema. Tony Todd will return to the role of Candyman.
“The last day of the Earth” (Le dernier voyage)

For the inexperienced viewer, French fiction begins and ends with several films by Luc Besson. Romain Kiro, director and screenwriter of The Last Day of Earth, decided to correct this misunderstanding. This film is a full-length adaptation of the short film by Kiro himself entitled “The Last Journey of the Mysterious Paul V.R.”, released in 2015. This is his debut in a big movie. The same actor, Hugo Becker, will return to the role of the main character. And as his father, Kiro managed to use heavy artillery – Jean Reno himself, who, unfortunately, has not appeared in a good movie for a long time.
The film is set in the distant future. The Red Moon flies towards the Earth. A collision with this space object threatens the death of all life on the planet. The only hope of mankind is the brilliant astronaut Paul V.R.However, on the eve of departure, he mysteriously disappears. Paul goes on the run in his flying car. He has to meet love, go through a not very pleasant reunion with his brother, and also go on the most dangerous and, possibly, the last journey of his life.
