Remote teaching and financial difficulties promoted school dropout, says expert

More than 650,000 children up to five years old left schools between 2019 and 2021, according to data from the first stage of the school census.

For the co-founder of Todos Pela Educação, Priscila Cruz, in addition to the health crisis, another factor compromised the children’s school life. “It also had to do with the fall in the income of families, of this middle class that, with great cost, sends their children to private schools”, she pointed out.

According to her, during the pandemic, many families chose to take younger children – who attend daycare or preschool – out of schools and take over homeschooling. However, the specialist points out that, from the age of four, enrollment is mandatory.

“We need to have a double, tripled effort now, in the coming years, to be able to look specifically at this poorest student. Recover his learning and ensure that he has the opportunity to have a better life”, he projected.
