The foreign minister of Syria’s transitional government said today that lifting economic sanctions imposed on Damascus under the presidency of Bashar al-Assad is the “key” to stability in the war-torn country. Assad al-Shibani took part in a discussion with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, a month after the Assad regime was toppled by an alliance of Islamist rebels. The West imposed sanctions on Damascus after the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests in 2011, leading to a civil war that has killed an estimated 600,000 people and forced millions of Syrians to flee their homes. “The reason for these sanctions is now in Moscow,” Shibani noted, referring to ousted president Bashar al-Assad, who has taken refuge in Russia.
