Renan Quinalha: Military dictatorship persecuted and tortured members of the LGBTQIA+ community

CNN Specialist in diversity and issues involving the LGBTQIA+ community, Renan Quinalha, evaluated this Saturday (7) the importance of the work of the Truth Commission, which also investigated crimes against the indigenous population and LBGTQIA+ during the military dictatorship in Brazil.

Quinalha points out that, between 1964 and 1985, 434 were murdered or disappeared by direct action of the Brazilian state. “The LBGTQIA+ community has suffered from various persecutions, such as arbitrary arrests, extortion and torture because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” he comments.

“The Brazilian state was twice sentenced by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to review the interpretation of the Amnesty Law, in order to determine responsibility and punish public agents who committed crimes against humanity. The Federal Supreme Court (STF) needs to judge the actions related to this issue that are pending. Only by ‘clearing’ this story will we be able to build an effective democracy in our country”, concludes the specialist.
