Yesterday, February 17, Renault officially showed its latest Austral crossover, the full premiere of which is due on March 9, 2022. Accordingly, this time the manufacturer showed the general outlines of the new vehicle in real photographs, but the SUV body itself was covered with special foil to visually hide the decorative features of the body elements. However, this does not prevent us from evaluating the dimensions of the new car, as well as taking a closer look at some design features that could not be hidden by protective camouflage.
For example, the new crossover received many body parts from the Megane E-Tech electric car already released in 2021. If you look closely at the photos, you can see that Renault Austal received exactly the same running lights – the headlight pattern is identical for both cars. In addition, apparently, the cars have the same hoods with characteristic depressions on the right and left, as well as very similar or even identical front and rear bumpers – you can see the characteristic grille pattern in the pictures. There are also plenty of similar elements at the back – the fifth door, brake lights and even the shape of the bumper in cars are very similar.
At the same time, the manufacturer recalled that the Renault Austral crossover is being created on the latest CMF modular platform, which allows for the maximum unification of production with the third-generation Nissan Qashqai. Together with the body design, which is somewhat similar to the Megane E-Tech, Renault has an excellent opportunity to reduce the overall production costs of this vehicle – a standard tactic for all major brands. It also became known that the new crossover will receive a 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, which will work in a hybrid format with an electric power plant. And, most surprisingly, a potential buyer will even be offered a model with mechanics, although there will be a variator.
But the main feature of the new vehicle is not in the body design or technical equipment, but in the interior. The fact is that the manufacturer decided to install an advanced digital cockpit in Renault Austral, which consists of a digital instrument panel and an impressive 24.3-inch touch screen. The result is an L-shaped panel (in fact, these are two separate displays that are only visually combined), which looks very stylish in the interior design.
