Renault will have a platform for a new SUV and electric cars in the interior of SP

French automaker Renault will have a new platform at the São José dos Pinhais (PR) plant, where it will produce an unprecedented small SUV.

With this base, the group will also be able to manufacture, in the future, hybrid and electric models.

The project, announced on Monday (7) to the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Júnior, includes the production of a new 1.0 turbo flex engine.

The platform, known as CMF-B, is also able to produce Nissan models that, together with Mitsubishi, form a global alliance between the three brands.

The value of the investment was not disclosed. The current BRL 1.1 billion plan announced in early 2021 was spent on modernizing the Captur, Duster, Kwid, Master models and ends this month with the launch of the new Oroch pickup.

According to the president of Renault Latin America, Luiz Fernando Pedrucci, the Brazilian subsidiary continues to work towards the approval of other products for the region.

new plan

For Ricardo Gondo, president of the company in the country, the platform and the new engine continue the strategy of reinforcing the brand’s presence in higher market segments, “consistent with the Renaulution strategic plan”. This plan consists of a change in strategy that replaces higher sales volume with fewer units, but more expensive models.

Asked about its intention to produce models at Renault as part of the synergy established in the alliance, Nissan said it “will not comment on possible plans for the future at this time”.

He added, however, that “this is yet another demonstration of how the alliance continues to be positive for the development of the brands, as we already do locally in several synergies”. Nissan has a factory in Resende (RJ).

The new SUV should hit the market in two years and will compete in the segment in which Fiat Pulse and Volkswagen T-Cross operate today. The company did not give details if it already has a project to produce electrified cars in the country. The group imports the electric Zoe and will soon bring the electric Kwid.

The Renault complex houses four factories for automobiles, light commercial vehicles, engines and aluminum injection and employs 6,000 employees.

The information is from the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
