Renesas unveils RL78 / F24 and RL78 / F23 automotive microcontrollers

The Japanese company Renesas Electronics has announced the release of 16-bit RL78 / F24 and RL78 / F23 microcontrollers intended for automobiles. They are designed to operate as sensors and actuators, and are interesting in that they are positioned to support the development of advanced technologies in the next generation of electronic and electrical (E / E) architecture.

With the expansion of the E / E architecture to include zone and domain control applications, control mechanisms evolve to include control of headlights, windows and mirrors, pump and fan motors, and multi-sensor operation. Going forward, high-speed and secure connectivity to zone and domain controllers is said to be critical for peripheral electronic control units (ECUs). Renesas’ new generation RL78 / F24 and RL78 / F23 microcontrollers meet the evolving technology requirements for actuator and sensor control with enhanced safety, wide connectivity and functional safety capabilities. The new devices support the high speed CAN FD (RL78 / F24) communication protocol and EVITA-Light safety and are optimized for systems targeting ASIL-B levels in accordance with the ISO 26262 functional safety standard.

Microcontrollers operate at 40 MHz. At the pin level, they are compatible with the RL78 / F14 and RL78 / F13 microcontrollers. The built-in flash memory is 128 or 256 KB. Microcontrollers are guaranteed to remain operational at temperatures up to 150 ° C. They are available in several package options, from a compact 5 x 5mm 32-pin QFN to a 100-pin QFP.

Samples of RL78 / F24 and RL78 / F23 microcontrollers will be available from April 2022, and their mass production is planned for the second half of 2023. The RL78 / F24 Target board and starter kit are currently in development.
