Reports of sexual harassment are still very timid, says delegate

In an interview with CNN This Saturday (18), Raquel Gallinati, director of the Association of Police Chiefs of Brazil, says that there has been an increase in reports of crimes of sexual harassment in the country, but they are still “very timid” and underreported.

“There is an increase in complaints, but still very timid in the face of the existing reality. We believe that there is still a very large number of underreporting, the so-called black figures, which are those crimes that occur and do not come to the attention of the authorities,” she said.

The term gained notoriety in the last week, after the expulsion of participants Guilherme Pinho, nicknamed MC Guimê, and Antônio Carlos Júnior, known as Cara de Sapato, from the reality show Big Brother Brasil 23 last Thursday. The two were accused of sexual harassment against Mexican actress and model Dania Mendez.

Camera footage of the reality show showed the two contestants trying to make physical contact with the Mexican during a party on the show. Dania was visiting Brazil in a kind of exchange with the program “La Casa de Los Famosos”.

The crime, according to the delegate, is still new – which helps explain why it is unknown by society.

“It was typified in the Penal Code in 2018. It is when the perpetrator of the crime performs acts to satisfy his own lust, without the agreement of the other. When there is no consent, we have the crime of harassment. There are the forced hugs, the stolen kisses, that touch on the buttocks, on the breasts, everything that goes beyond the intimacy of the other without consent.”

Gallinati points out that sexual crimes, like this one, can be investigated even without complaint. “It is a crime that does not depend on the representation of the victim. From the moment the reality broadcaster released images, these images co-substantiate the police investigation that is being investigated, ”he says.

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro opened an inquiry to investigate alleged sexual harassment inside the Big Brother Brasil house, located in the Jacarepaguá region, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, where the TV Globo studios are located. MC Guimê and Cara de Sapato should be heard next week.

The penalty ranges from 1 to 5 years of imprisonment.
