Repsol buys Gana Energía, the energy marketer promoted by Juan Roig

Repsol has acquired the majority of the electricity and gas trading company Gain Energy, owned by Angels, the investment company of Juan Roig, president of Mercadona, informed the energy company, which did not specify the amount of the operation.

After the acquisition, the founding partners remain in the capital of the company in a minority way, while Angels has sold all of its shares to Repsol.

Founded in 2015, Gana EnergÃa operates online and offers 100% renewable energy. The Valencian company entered the program in 2018 Shuttle, when it had 12,000 clients, 22 employees and a gross turnover of 10.5 million euros. Currently, the company has 37,000 clients, 55 workers and a turnover of 25 million euros.

The ‘start up’ has received the support of Marina de Empresas for more than two years, an initiative promoted by Juan Roig, being accelerated by Lanzadera and later receiving the investment of Angels, in a round for 500,000 euros that he led .

Financial year 2020 was the best year for the company, despite the difficulties in the Spanish economy, thanks to its commitment to digitization, its low prices and placing the customer at the center. In addition, Gana EnergÃa entered the natural gas market last September.

The CEO of Gana EnergÃa, Antonio Picazo placeholder image, stressed that this operation represents “a huge step” to consolidate within the Spanish energy market. “Being part of a large multinational energy group like Repsol is great news for us. I am very grateful for all the support received from Marina de Empresas,” he said.

For his part, Repsol’s Director of Commercial Business Development and Customer Strategy, Luis Santoja, highlighted that with this acquisition the group “reinforces its commitment to a multi-energy approach focused on the customer”.

“The acquisition of Gana EnergÃa complements the company’s current value offer and is one more piece of Repsol’s commitment to continue creating an energy supply for all households,” added the executive.

For Repsol, this operation allows it to take a further step in its goal of being a relevant player in the electricity and gas market in Spain, where it entered in 2018 with the purchase of Viesgo’s assets and where it currently adds a portfolio of 1.2 million clients.

In addition, the group led by Josu Jon Imaz it also currently has almost 3,300 megawatts (MW) of total installed capacity for low-carbon generation.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Angels, Pepe Peris, affirmed that with this operation the mission of the investment firm is fulfilled, “helping the growth of a company with a long history in Marina de Empresas, since it was accelerated by Lanzadera at the time”.
