Request for the convening of the Institutions Committee by SYRIZA as well

A request for an emergency convening of the Special Permanent Committee on Institutions and Transparency of the Parliament was sent to its President by the MPs of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, so that the Governor of the EYP and the President of the Communications Privacy Assurance Authority can be heard. The request is signed by all the members of SYRIZA – PS who participate in the Committee: Nikolaos Voutsis, Giorgos Katrougalos, Theofilos Xanthopoulos, Spyros Lappas and Pavlos Polakis.

It is noted that Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his telephone conversation with the president of the Parliament, requested the convening of the competent Committee as soon as possible, even tomorrow, as blue sources informed earlier.

“REQUEST FOR AN EMERGENCY CONVENING OF THE COMMITTEE FOR A HEARING OF THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THE EYP AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PRIVACY OF COMMUNICATIONS AUTHORITY”

Dear Mr. President,

With this letter, we ask that you take the initiative within the framework of the exercise of your duties, according to the Regulations of the Parliament, in order to invite the Governor of the EYP and the President of the Authority for Ensuring the Privacy of Communications to a hearing at an extraordinary meeting of the Committee as soon as possible, in relation to disturbing information that came to light in the last few days regarding the monitoring of the telephone of the President of PASOK-KINAL, Mr. Androulakis. These complaints do not only concern the President of PASOK-KINAL or his party, but they attack democracy and freedoms in our country at their core. The judiciary is already examining the case, following a complaint by the President of PASOK, but the Commission must exercise its own competence, in a matter of obvious institutional importance. If the president of a parliamentary party is not safe from surveillance, who can feel safe in the Greece of K. Mitsotakis?

This complaint comes to be added to other detailed complaints for which we had requested the convening of the Commission in the immediate past. Specifically, according to a detailed report by the authoritative newspaper “The Editors’ Newspaper”, the EYP monitors ordinary citizens and informs the prime minister himself about their movements.

According to the revelations of the Newspaper and the EYP signals published, the latter requests:

· monitoring citizens participating in rallies against measures to address the health crisis and collecting citizens’ personal information, occupation, mobile phone numbers, social media accounts and ideological background.

· the monitoring of a 12-year-old refugee boy from Syria, whose sketch was published in the newspaper Le Monde, as well as the journalist and the lawyer who met him,

· the monitoring of a public official because he allegedly defends the labor and individual rights of immigrants,

· the follow-up of a lawyer who took on the defense of an immigrant

In order to investigate in depth the above disturbing and sad events, we ask you to immediately convene an extraordinary meeting of the Committee based on the 43A Regulation of the Parliament, in order to summon the Commander of the EYP and the President of the Communications Privacy Assurance Authority to a hearing, in order to light is shed on the above crucial issues for the Republic.
