RES: They produced more than 10 gigawatts in 2022 – 68% of their penetration on April 2

Renewable energy sources are breaking one record after another, both in terms of investment and in meeting demand.

During the two days of April 1st and 2nd, green technologies covered 67% and 68% respectively of the country’s energy needs, figures that are a new record. It is also characteristic of the dynamics of RES, the fact that on April 2, also for the first time, 500 megawatts of power was discharged from renewable sources, for reasons of network stability. This means that if it were possible to absorb these quantities, the penetration of RES would be even greater, which highlights the importance of energy storage.

The operation of the system with 68% participation of renewable sources is an excellent performance for today, but it will be the rule in a few years as the goal for 2030 is, 67% of electricity to come from renewable sources.

As IPTO President and CEO Manos Manousakis underlined at the Delphi conference, “Large storage projects are necessary to maximize the benefits of green energy, while maintaining the stability of the electricity system.”

Mr. Manousakis also mentioned that the investment program of IPTO creates the conditions for the reception of renewable power sources of 29 gigawatts by 2030. “Today the power of RES in operation amounts to 9 GW, the occupied space for new projects to 10 GW while from At the beginning of 2021, requests have been submitted for another 19 GW “, he added.

According to the official data and estimates of DAPEEP (Manager of Renewable Sources and Guarantees of Origin) the power of RES in Greece will break this year the limit of 10 gigawatts. The forecast, based on the information about the units that are under construction, is that the “barrier” of 10 gigawatts will be broken in September while the total power will reach 10.5 gigawatts at the end of the year.

The evolution of RES from 2019 is indicative of the market trend. Specifically, according to DAPEEP:

-In 2019, 905 MW RES units were put into operation (of which 746 MW wind, 148 MW photovoltaic).

-In 2020, 999.3 new MWs were connected (535.6 MW wind, 447 photovoltaic)

-In 2021, 1,233 MW were added (398 MW wind, 808 MW photovoltaic)

-The forecast for 2022 raises the power of the new units to 1,900 MW (910 MW Wind, 950 MW Photovoltaic)

According to the CEO of DAPEEP, Giannis Giarentis, the forecasts for 2022 show great optimism for the future of ELAPE (it is the special account for the financing of RES), which is a guarantee for the investment security that RES need, even after the disbursement of hundreds of millions of euros in the year for the subsidy of energy consumption of households and businesses that has been implemented since last September. “The distribution of ELAPE surpluses to consumers confirms the contribution of RES to the reduction of energy costs. In addition to reducing the unit price of KWh, RES support the consumer,” said Mr. Giarentis.
