Research by Kaspersky Lab: every third PC in Russia still runs on Windows 7

Employees of “Kaspersky Lab” conducted a study, during which it turned out that the operating system Windows 7, which has long been unsupported by Microsoft, is still in high demand. For example, the share of home PCs running this system is 37% of the total mass, among small and medium-sized businesses 34% of organizations work on an outdated OS, among microbusiness representatives the situation is one percent worse – 35%. Naturally, using an outdated operating system is a rather dangerous activity, since it is much easier for attackers to gain access to sensitive user data.

This is especially dangerous for small businesses that cannot afford advanced protection against various threats or do not devote impressive funds to cybersecurity. Of course, Microsoft has introduced a special paid support program for enterprises that will run until 2023 – extended support for regular users ended on January 14, 2020. But upon completion of paid extended support, companies are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the more modern Windows 10 operating system, which receives the latest security patches and is at a much lower risk of being compromised.

However, the use of Windows 7 is not yet the most surprising – many companies and users still use much more outdated versions of the Windows operating system. For example, Windows XP and Vista are actively used, support for which ended in 2014 and 2017, respectively. There are not so many user data, about 1% of the total number of PCs, but they are in no hurry to update the system for a variety of reasons. But on the other hand, more than half (56%) of modern PCs use Windows 10 – the newest and most secure operating system at the moment.
