Research: in the first quarter of 2021, miners bought 25% of video cards

The mining frenzy continues – according to Jon Peddle Research, for the first quarter of 2021, miners bought more than 700,000 video cards, which is a quarter of the total supply.

To assess purchases of video cards by miners, analysts at Jon Peddle Research used the so-called “attachment ratio”, which shows the ratio of the number of video cards sold to the number of other components. True, analysts emphasized that the statistics do not take into account miners who have bought a full-fledged system. In addition, the model is less accurate than in 2017 due to the global shortage of semiconductors.

However, the graphs are quite similar to the situation observed in 2017 and 2018. Then the miners also bought out many video cards, and after the decline in the cryptocurrency market, a surge in sales of devices in the secondary market was recorded, which is also reflected in the graph. According to analysts, the cost of video accelerators sold to miners in the first quarter of 2021 was about $ 500 million.

Note that video accelerator manufacturers are trying to deal with the shortage of video cards caused by miners. Thus, Nvidia began shipping devices with a reduced hash rate for mining. In doing so, she launched special models called CMPs, designed specifically for miners.
