Research shows an increase in consumption by Brazilians in bars and restaurants

A survey carried out by Credicard, based on the expenses of the brand’s cards, shows that there was an increase in consumption in Brazilian bars and restaurants. According to the survey, in October this year there was a 28% increase in consumption in these establishments compared to October last year. The data is a reflection of the advance in vaccination and the significant improvement in the numbers of the pandemic.

In comparison with the month of September 2021, the increase in consumption was 10%. The survey also shows that 86% of these expenses in bars and restaurants last month were in face-to-face purchases.

The catering sector has also shown improvements. According to Credicard, the total spent on credit cards in the sector, in October, increased 56% compared to the same month last year, and rose 8% compared to September 2021.

Corroborating the above numbers, a survey carried out by the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel) between October 14 and 22, revealed that 79% of the sector’s businessmen interviewed showed confidence in the recovery and said they expected an increase in sales at the end of year.

Despite this, the survey indicated that there are still 32% of bar and/or restaurant owners who continue to work at the loss. The number, however, presents a small improvement in relation to the survey carried out in September, when 35% were operating in the red.

“On the one hand, we are optimistic about the recovery. We will close the second half with real growth of 2% to 3%. With the advance of vaccination and the improvement of the indicators, this desire that had been repressed among Brazilians for months is becoming a reality in meetings around tables in bars and restaurants”, reports the association’s executive president, Paulo Solmucci.

“At the same time, we continue with our feet on the ground, understanding that we are still facing a very difficult scenario, with high inflation and the high level of indebtedness of companies. The pandemic was particularly hard on the sector and we will need at least two years to get things back on track”, he concludes.
