Research shows that 82% of women in menopause report depression

Phase marked by significant changes in a woman’s life, the menopause comes accompanied by hot flashes, insomnia and, for 82% of women, depression and anxiety according to a survey carried out by the Plenapausa platform.

Between August 2021 and June 2024, the website made available the “Menopause Test”, which collected responses from more than 17 thousand women from all over Brazil.

With an average age of 47, the interviewees reported suffering from depression and/or anxiety, which are identified shortly after menopause. More than hormonal changes, the research showed that this phase of women’s lives also has a major impact on their mental health.

“Menopause involves intense hormonal changes that affect not only the body, but also the brain. Lack of knowledge and support worsens psychological suffering,” she says. Marcia Cunha CEO and co-founder of Plenapausa — the first femtech in Brazil focused on women’s health after menopause.

“We need to break the silence surrounding menopause and show that seeking psychological support is an essential step in taking care of mental health,” she emphasizes, reinforcing the importance of campaigns such as Yellow September, which open up space for dialogue on topics such as this.
