Research shows that dish made can range between R$ 10 and R$ 56

A survey carried out by the Brazilian Consumer Protection Association (Proteste) shows that the traditional ‘PF’, the dish made with rice, beans, protein and salad, can vary between R$10 and R$56 in the country.

The survey considered prices of 246 establishments in four capitals: Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Paulo (SP), Salvador (BA) and Porto Alegre (RS).

The biggest variation in the value of the dish made, of 460%, was seen in Salvador, where it was found between R$10 and R$56. Rio de Janeiro comes right after, with a variation of 380%, between R$10 and BRL 48.

In Porto Alegre, the cheapest individual was observed at R$15, while the most expensive at R$48, a variation of 220%. The smallest difference occurred in São Paulo, with the meal between R$ 13 and R$ 29.99, a variation of 131%.

“If we multiply this difference by working days of the month (22 days on average for the year 2022), in which people normally eat out of the house, it reaches R$373.78 in São Paulo and R$1,012 in Salvador. In this logic, in a year, the economy in São Paulo is up to R$ 4,111.58 and in Bahia, R$ 11,132, considering 11 months, since the worker has one month of vacation in the year”, highlighted Proteste.

The values were collected in the four capitals between the 1st and 11th of September this year. In Salvador, the average is R$24.85; in Porto Alegre, R$ 24.35; in Rio de Janeiro, R$ 23.09; and in São Paulo, R$ 18.44.

According to Proteste, in order to save money, in addition to the classic price survey, consumers can adopt some practices, including finding out about loyalty programs, such as cards where you get a free meal after a certain time of consumption in the establishment.

Another strategy is to look for restaurants that have agreements with the workplace, offering discounts, as well as checking with the waiter if there are specials of the day not listed on the menu.

Mariana Rinaldi, a specialist at Proteste, also advises you to walk more around the region where you want to eat, as the price can vary significantly in nearby places. In the central region of São Paulo, for example, in a distance of 210 meters, it is possible to pay R$ 13.99 or R$ 23.90 for the dish made.

“Prices vary a lot due to competition between points of sale, the seasonality of food, even the size. All this influences the price. It is very important for consumers to be willing to leave the places they already know and are used to visiting, to have this availability to know and explore the surroundings”, he added.

Another possibility is to adhere to lunchboxes, taking food from home to work, according to Proteste. The economist at Fundação Getúlio Vargas, Alberto Ajzental, raised the average price of three home-made meal models, with the following items: rice, beans, egg, oil, lettuce and tomato.

In the meatless model, the cost of food is R$ 3.08. With second-rate meat, the value reached R$ 7.58. In the lunch box that contains prime meat, the price goes to R$ 10.58.
