Research: which Russian operators protect against spam the best

In December last year, TelecomDaily conducted an extensive online survey among adult residents of Russian cities with a population of over a million who use mobile communications on the topic of spam and fraud through calls. In the final table of results, the specialists of the analytical company derived five separate criteria (number identification, voice assistant for answering spam calls, blocking numbers in case of number spoofing, virtual number with call forwarding and blocking online ads), each of which was awarded points for quality implementation. Due to this, it was possible to form the top mobile operators who scored the most points.

It is worth noting that the vast majority of cellular subscribers in Russia have already contacted phone scammers – 91% of the surveyed users said they received unwanted calls, 46% received spam via SMS, and 37% of people received spam via messengers. Of the 350 respondents, only 1.7% of respondents said they had not encountered fraud in this area.

Surprisingly, most often scammers introduce themselves as bank security officers – 84% of respondents said that unwanted calls came under this pretext. The story of winning the lottery is also in demand among attackers – 34% of respondents noted it in the questionnaire. At the same time, a third of the surveyed users reported several calls from scammers per year, and 16.4% of respondents receive calls from intruders literally once a week.

Unfortunately, the work of scammers is bearing fruit – 12% of users who took part in the survey said they suffered material damage, and 28% of them suffered significant damage. This is probably due to the low level of advancement in terms of using various security services – 40% of respondents do not use the black list of numbers on their smartphones, 29% do not know about the number identification system, and 10% do not block calls from spoof numbers.

Accordingly, in the final table of TelecomDaily, we can safely distinguish three leaders – MegaFon, Tinkoff Mobile and Yandex (this company is not a mobile operator). The reason for the impressive gap from potential competitors is that many operators simply do not have a voice assistant, plus not all of them have the function of blocking calls or online advertising. And VTB Mobile, surprisingly, does not even have a caller ID function.
