Residents come together to collect trash from beaches after storm in Ubatuba (SP)

After heavy rains hit the city of Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo, residents of the municipality formed a collective effort to collect a large amount of trash that was washed onto the beaches.

This Sunday (10), the group enters the third day of waste collection. Since 6am, volunteers have already filled five dumpsters with rubbish removed from Praia do Cruzeiro. The action is organized by the Tamoio de Ubatuba Environmental Group.

Ubatuba declared an emergency situation in the municipality, last Friday (8), due to the damage caused by last week's rain. The measure is valid for 180 days.

From Wednesday (6) to Thursday (7), Ubatuba recorded a volume of 347 millimeters of rain, which caused several material and environmental damages.

Residents of the Folha Seca neighborhood became isolated after the collapse of a bridge that connects the place to other regions of the city. Yesterday, the Army worked in partnership with the Civil Defense of São Paulo to set up a temporary passage to the community.

According to the state Civil Defense, teams remain on site this Sunday to provide support and guide residents of the neighborhood, who received 25 tons of humanitarian aid items, such as food and cleaning and personal hygiene items.

Water collection was reestablished in the community yesterday with the support of agents from Sabesp, a water supply company in São Paulo.

On Sunday morning, vehicle traffic was reopened in Serra Antiga da Tamoios, which had been interrupted on Friday due to the high volume of rain. Traffic is normalized towards the coast and also for those heading towards São José dos Campos.
