While the world awaits the third season of The Bearspeculation about a workplace romance between Carmy’s Jeremy Allen White and Sydney’s Ayo Edebiri they have reached a boiling point. Although the topic has already been widely discussed and dissected by viewers of the FX series, the topic has forcefully resurfaced as the return of The Bear, with its third season.
But when at a press conference, he was asked if The Bear had considered the possibility of writing a love story between the two protagonists, both White and Edebiri responded with a firm “No”.
“In the rooms where the show is being worked on, there has been no talk of any romantic implications between Carmy and Sydney,” White added.
The two stars have however agreed that an official collaboration agreement between Carmy and Sydney, as shown in the Season 3 trailer, it could affect their dynamic. “Carmy is someone you’ve always admired, but who you now do business with,” Edebiri said. “And the situation is much more chaotic than you could have imagined before they started working together.”
White admitted that his character is “not an ace communicator, but he often resorts to grand gestures to try to communicate with Syd, the kitchen or anyone else.” he then added: «He has many things that are constantly going through his head and those close to him are not always able to understand or imagine what is actually happening. You will see, of course, how this will affect the relationship between Carmen and Syd, but I believe that Carmen’s effort to be more welcoming to her is the basis of the collaboration agreement.”
The renewed interest in Carmen and Sydney’s bond comes amid speculation about the off-screen dynamic between White and Edebiri, who have refused to address dating rumors. “We get along very well, in front of and away from the camera,” White told Vanity Fair for Edebiri’s recent cover story, «I have great respect for her as a person, but also as an artist. Syd is always able to… I don’t know, offer something different to Carmy, and she’s usually right. I think Ayo is usually right too.”
For his part, Edebiri seems to have wanted to highlight a change in the atmosphere of their characters, saying a VF: «Work can be a very intimate and personal thing, very emotional, and I think that when you work in environments where creativity is central or at least present to some extent, it is easy for feelings like passion to arise». Then adding: «Also, the boy has beautiful blue eyes. Do you understand what I mean? They are eyes in which you want to project yourself».
During the press conference, which was also attended by the cast colleagues Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas And Ricky Staffieri, Edebiri has remained equally tight-lipped about the potential on-screen romance between Sydney and Boyce’s Marcus. “No, probably not,” Edebiri responded when asked if she could tease anything about their relationship in season three. “You’ll have to look at it.”
Edebiri, who makes his directorial debut with the sixth episode of the third season of The Bearhas already said that it is “frustrating” to read fan theories that focus on a romance between Sydney and Carmy. “That’s not really what we think about when we make the show. I understand that it can be an ingredient of the show, even from a cultural point of view, but I don’t think they’re going to get what they want,” the actress told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2023. “I think it’s incredibly beautiful to have this dynamic on screen that isn’t romantic, but is charged and sexy.”
