A film to tell what lies behind the legend, the sequins, the untouchable epithet of “Queen of Soul”. Respect, whose debut in Italy will take place on Thursday 30 September, is the story of Aretha Franklin, a daughter born of a bulky father, an adolescent mother, a determined professional, a sister, a wife. Of a woman, more complex and multifaceted than what music has known or meant.

Aretha Franklin, who in the film, of which we show you above a preview clip, has the face and voice of Jennifer Hudson, had to grow quickly, the Church and the choir to determine its identity.

An identity nurtured over the years, when as a child the preacher father invited her to sing. She would become a star, and in music she would find the way for a ransom. Aretha Franklin, a woman in a world of men, a black person in an America still ravaged by prejudice, has made of her experience a universal model, which Jennifer Hudson and Liesl Tommy, director, wanted to restore topicality. Because Aretha Franklin, in the director’s words, is not a singer, but “the voice that resonates in the Black Lives Matter Movement ».
