Restaurant fire leaves at least 22 dead in China

A fire in a restaurant in northeastern China killed 22 people on Tuesday (29), the official news agency Xinhua said in the latest in a series of similar fatal incidents across the country.

Xinhua did not identify the cause of the fire, but said President Xi Jinping called him “a deeply serious lesson” and urged local authorities to quickly treat the injured, determine the cause of the fire and blame the culprits.

The fire began at 12:25 pm (local time) in a restaurant in the residential area of Liaoyang, in the province of Liaoning, said state station CCTV.

At least 22 people died and three people were injured.

Hao Peng, secretary of the Liaon Provincial Government Party Committee, said that 22 fire trucks and 85 firefighters were mobilized to the scene.

Hao stated that the rescue work at the scene was completed and people were removed.

This has been the latest in a series of similar incidents across the country in recent years.

In April, 20 people died in a fire in an apartment for the elderly in a nursing home in Hebei province in the north of the country.

Gas leaks caused at least two major explosions of large residential areas last year: an explosion in a restaurant in Hebei province killed two people and injured 26 in March, and an explosion in a tall building in Shenzhen province in the country in September, killed one person.
