Restoring the budget for Cities is urgent, says a member of the transition team

In an interview with CNN this Sunday (4), the former federal deputy and member of the WG of Cities of the government transition team, Geraldo Magela, said that “recomposing the budget of the future Ministry of Cities is urgent”.

“The picture we found for 2023 is one of absolute chaos. From now on, we are going to start talking both internally in the WG, and with the other members of the transition team, about what to do for next year”, he said.

“The budget forecast for 2022 was BRL 1.3 billion; for 2023, R$ 99 million. This means more than 92% cut in resources for the areas of the Ministry of Cities, that is, housing, mobility and sanitation.”

The way out, according to Magela, is to recompose the budget from the resources that can be released by the PEC of the Transition — dubbed the PEC of the Burst —, in progress in Congress.

“The only solution is to reset the budget. We know that the PEC can release a part of these necessary resources to recompose the budget of the future Ministry of Cities, which we are having a very positive signal that will be created. To carry out all the housing, mobility and sanitation works, both those that are in progress and new ones, we need resources.”
