The sentences of the four defendants in the judgment on the burning of the Kiss Nightclub are expected to be handed down this Friday (10), after all defendants have been heard at the Central Forum of Porto Alegre,
The result was scheduled for the morning of Friday, but the Public Ministry asked for a reply to the lawyers’ defenses shortly before midnight. That way, they will be able to sustain their charges for another two hours from 10am. At 1:15 pm, the defense benches must present the rejoinders.
After these two procedures, the Sentencing Council will meet with Judge Orlando Faconi Neto for a vote, and the result is scheduled to be released at 3:30 pm.
The tragedy, which killed 242 people and left 636 injured, began on the stage, where the Banda Gurizada Fandangueira was performing, and soon spread, causing a lot of toxic smoke. One of the members fired a pyrotechnic device, hitting part of the building’s roof, which caught fire.
The club had only one unobstructed exit door. Firefighters and people tried, in every way, to open passages by breaking the walls of the house, but the delay in helping turned out to be tragic for the visitors.
Most ended up dying from inhaling toxic smoke from the sound insulation of the ceiling, formed by a flammable foam, incompatible with modern safety standards.
