The EV Sales thematic resource has summed up the results of the electric vehicle market for 2020. Tesla Model 3 turned out to be the leader, just like a year ago: this model alone accounted for 12% of the market! In total, 365,240 Model 3 were sold in 2020. In second place was the newcomer – the Chinese Wuling HongGuang Mini EV: it secured 4% of the market (119,255 units). Interestingly, this year, the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV is not slowing down: in January in China, these electric vehicles were sold over 30,000 units. If demand remains the same throughout the year, then this car has every chance of surpassing the Tesla Model 3 in the world rankings for 2021. But the third place was taken by the European “old man” Renault Zoe – 100 431 cars sold and 3% of the market.
A place | Model | Sales in 2020 | Market share,% | Place in the ranking of 2019 |
1 | Tesla Model 3 | 365 240 | 12 | 1 |
2 | Wuling HongGuang Mini EV | 119 255 | 4 | Not for sale |
3 | Renault Zoe | 100 431 | 3 | 8 |
4 | Tesla Model Y | 79 734 | 3 | Not for sale |
5 | Hyundai Kona EV | 65 075 | 2 | 9 |
6 | VW ID.3 | 56 937 | 2 | Not for sale |
7 | Nissan Leaf | 55 724 | 2 | 3 |
8 | Audi e-tron | 47 928 | 2 | 25 |
9 | Baojun E-Series | 47 704 | 2 | 5 |
10 | GW ORA R1/ Black Cat | 46 796 | 1 | 27 |
What else is interesting in the ranking? For example, the Tesla Model Y crossover started very vigorously: 79,734 sold cars, 3% of the market and 4th place in the rating. Hyundai Kona EV improved its position in a year – it dropped to 9 places by 5. VW ID.3 and Audi e-tron also prove their worth: it is interesting that the gap in their sales volumes is almost imperceptible against the background of the price difference.
