Films from major studios like Disney, Warner and paramount have driven the resumption of Brazilian cinema. In the first half of 2022, the screening rooms have already received 44.5 million people, mainly to watch foreign productions, according to data from the National Film Agency (Ancine).
The number for the last six months almost matches the final result of last year, which added up to a total audience of 52.6 million during 2021.
The sector raised around R$ 869.9 million in the first six months of this year, a little less than last year’s total income, which was R$ 918.9 million.
According to Ancine, the film industry was heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with establishments closed indefinitely, billionaire premieres postponed and productions paralyzed.
Despite the reopening at the end of 2020, exhibitors had the challenge of bringing the public back to movie theaters, with an altered audience limit and protocols to combat the spread of the disease. In addition, the rise of streaming services and the shrinking viewing window had a big impact on the recovery.
It was during the pandemic that several studios bet on their own streaming, such as Disney and HBO, and launched the platforms in Brazil. The advertising investment of these players to acquire and keep subscribers increased considerably in 2021, compared to 2019. There was a rise of 243%, according to a survey by Kantar Ibope Media.
Also according to the survey, these video platforms reach around 42% of people in a month at home, and the main reasons for subscribing to the service are: the price, the wide catalog of new movies and series, as well as the older productions, the website/application works well on all devices and the ease of navigation.
Today’s largest subscription service, Netflix , surpassed the mark of 200 million subscribers during the pandemic. In the first quarter of 2022, the giant had to lay off employees for the first time after a sudden drop in subscribers for the first time in 10 years, caused by the end of the lockdown and increased competition, for example.
