The reestablishment of the Amazon Fund is vitally important to combat illegal deforestation.
This is the assessment of the president of the Brazilian Institute of Environmental Protection Carlos Bocuhy.
Last Sunday, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a decree that reestablishes the mechanism, created in 2008 to finance projects against deforestation, but which has been stopped since April 2019.
THE CNN Radio Bocuhy stated that, with the release, there will be more than “3 billion reais for monitoring, inspection and financing of projects and programs for states and municipalities.”
With this, according to him, it will be possible to “constitute public policies with ample funding against illegal deforestation.”
The expert points out that the Amazon region has high crime rates, which “requires measures on several fronts.”
“I highlight the importance of monitoring and command and control, establishing not only the financial issue, but an investigation system that involves the Federal Police, Ibama and environmental agencies of the states”, he added.
The efficiency of the application of resources from the Amazon Fund, for Bocuhy, depends on “intelligent management of inspection in the Amazon.”
During the new Lula government, the president of Proam believes that protecting the biome will be “a priority for Brazil.”
“Given the importance that the Amazon has for South America, as a driver of water for the continent and responsible for climate control, it will be our priority.”
According to Bocuhy, the choice of Marina Silva to occupy the Ministry of the Environment is positive, since she is “the best name politically due to international support, which will attract international resources and pass on credibility”.
