Retail sales grew 6.9% on Black Friday compared to the same date last year, according to the Cielo Extended Retail Index (ICVA). E-commerce registered an increase of 21.1% while sales in the physical universe rose 5.4%.
In the evaluation of Cielo’s Superintendent of Data and Innovation, Vitor Levi, Black Friday has been strengthened since 2020 mainly because of the e-commerce channel, increasingly inserted in the routine of consumers. “Even with this performance, this year’s Black Friday revenue is still 2.8% below that seen in 2019, the year before the pandemic”, he says in a note.
Also according to Levi, the drop in the Furniture, Electrical and Department sector, which is usually one of the positive highlights of Black Friday, may be associated with the anticipation of promotions throughout the month of November. This likely includes televisions purchased for the World Cup, which kicks off on November 20; before Black Friday.
The segment that most stood out was Drugstores and Pharmacies, with growth of 25.9% in sales, followed by Tourism and Transport (+25.1%), Cosmetics and Personal Hygiene (+22.2%), Food – Bars and Restaurants (+18.6%), Clothing (+11.8%), Supermarkets and Hypermarkets (11.7%), Specialized Food Retail (+10.3%), Bookstores, Stationery Stores and Related Products (9.4%), Veterinary and Pet-Shops (+6.7), Optics and Jewelry (+4.6%) and Materials for construction (4.3%).
Of the most significant segments for Retail, the only one that experienced a drop in revenue (-3.6%) was Furniture, Eletro and Dept.
The South region of the country, with regard to face-to-face sales, experienced the greatest evolution in sales: 14.2%, with highlights for Rio Grande do Sul (+18.4%), Santa Catarina (+13.0%) and Paraná (+11.1%). Next comes the Southeast region (+6.5%), led by Minas Gerais (+8.6%), São Paulo (+7.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (+3.3%).
In the Midwest, Retail sales grew by 3.5%, with emphasis on Mato Grosso do Sul (+9.4%). In the Northeast, sales increased by 0.2%, with Ceará showing the greatest variation: 4.1%.
