Retail has a 1% rise in real sales in October, index shows

Brazilian retail sales rose 1% in October compared to the same period in 2021, discounted for inflation, according to the Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA), which tracks 1.1 million retailers accredited to the largest means of payment company.

In nominal terms, the index that reflects the sales revenue observed by the retailer, there was a high of 10.5%, Cielo announced this Monday (14).

Sales in real terms accelerated in relation to September (+0.3%), while they lost steam compared to the previous month when inflation is not discounted (+13%).

Overall, the calendar hampered performance, as there was one less Friday – the day when sales are usually more intense – and one Monday – the date when trade is less heated – more than in October. of 2021.

In addition, Cielo cited elections on two Sundays in the month, which also slightly disrupted trade. Children’s Day on a Wednesday, compared to Tuesday last year, stretched the weekend, making the scenario a little more favorable.

For Felipe Baran, head of Intelligence at Cielo, trade continues to recover. “It’s the twelfth consecutive month of high sales,” he said, noting that segments such as gas stations, which had slowed in September, returned to evolve.

He pointed out that Black Friday, at the end of November, can help in the recovery of durable and semi-durable goods, which appeared negative in the last five months in the deflated view, since the date usually favors sales of furniture, electronics and department, in addition to of clothing.
