Retail loss index drops to 1.21% in 2021, says association

The return of consumers to stores made the loss rate grow in some retail sectors, although, in general, it has fallen in Brazilian retail.

The indicator rose to 1.21% in 2021, totaling just over R$24 billion, as pointed out by the Brazilian Association for Loss Prevention (Abrappe). In 2020, the index had been 1.33%, with losses totaling BRL 23.26 billion. A year earlier, the average was 1.36%.

In the supermarket sector, however, losses increased from 2.10% to 2.15%. In sporting goods retail, they went from 0.99% to 1.12% and, in magazines, they jumped from 0.91% to 0.94%. In the electronics sector, they went from 0.11% to 0.26%.

The data are from the 5th Abrappe Research on Losses in Brazilian Retail, carried out by Abrappe in partnership with KPMG.

Of the 12 segments, four (supermarkets, sports, department stores and electronics) recorded an increase in loss rates in 2021 compared to 2020. In supermarket, sports and department stores, unknown losses were the main responsible for the growth.

“The unknown loss, mainly thefts (external and internal), were the biggest contributor to this increase, as in 2020 we had customer access control due to the limitations imposed by local governments due to the pandemic. In 2021, this scenario normalized over time, increasing the risk of shoplifting”, says Carlos Eduardo Santos, president of Abrappe.

Comparing the 12 sectors surveyed, supermarkets, with 2.15%, is, by far, the one with the highest rates of retail losses. Of this total, 1.43% come from operational breakdowns and 0.72% from unknown losses, especially theft.

“However, operational losses generated by products without sales conditions due to expiration, perishability and food waste, in addition to operational errors in inventory management, continue to be the main causes of losses in the sector (66.51%)”, argues Santos. .

The growth of losses in the electromobile sector is due, in turn, to operational breakdowns (breakdowns of parts, for example) due to increasing sales through e-commerce.
