Sales in the Brazilian retail trade were practically stable in December, with a slight drop of 0.1% compared to the previous month, when they had registered an increase of 0.6%.
The data were released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Wednesday (9), in the Monthly Trade Survey.
Market analysts had expected a 0.5% decline in December compared to November and a 3.3% year-to-date decline.
After the annual increase in the IBGE indicator, 2021 was the fifth consecutive year of positive results for the volume of retail sales.
The result is slightly higher than that of 2020, of 1.2%, but is below the high of 2019, which was 1.8%.
“As the first half of 2020 was marked by the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, with the closure of trade for several months in much of the country, the basis of comparison for the first half of 2021 was low and, therefore, growth in this period was expected”, explains the research manager, Cristiano Santos.
“The second half of 2020 was marked by the resumption of activities, while the same period of 2021 was not as strong for the volume of retail sales”, he added.
