Retail sales grow 1.3% in December 2022, points out Cielo index

Brazilian retail sales in December grew by 1.3%, discounting inflation, compared to the same month in 2021, according to Cielo data released this Thursday (12).

According to the means of payment company, the Cielo Extended Retail Index (ICVA) registered an increase of 10.2% in nominal terms, which mirror the sales revenue observed by the retailer.

favorable timing

Cielo assesses that retail lost part of the vigorous pace observed months ago, despite showing recovery, adding that the month of December was favored by the effects of the calendar.

With Christmas falling on a Sunday, consumers had a full week, including Saturday, to shop. Already in 2021, the date had fallen on a Saturday.

In the New Year there was the same positive effect for purchases. The 31st of last year fell on a Saturday, while in 2021 it was on a Friday. Therefore, this ended up generating a longer period for shopping and preparations for New Year’s Eve.

“The month of December marks the 14th month in a row of sales growth. With each passing month, the comparison base for the previous year is further away from the effects of the quarantine, which implies milder growth than we saw over the years 2021 and 2022, since we are comparing periods with normal activity economically,” said Cielo’s data and innovation superintendent, Vitor Levi, in a company statement.

Cielo found that the non-durable goods and services sectors recorded growth compared to December 2021, but durable and semi-durable goods fell.

Sectors

With the discount for inflation and the calendar adjustment, the macro-sectors of Non-durable Goods and services registered growth in relation to December 2021. On the other hand, the macro sector of Durable goods and semi-durable suffered a fall.

Gas stations were the segment that most contributed to the increase in the Non-Durable Goods sector. The highlight in the Services sector was Tourism and Transport. The Durable Goods macrosector, which presented a drop in sales, was mainly affected by the Apparel segment.
