Retail sales grew 3% in December compared to the same period in 2020, discounting inflation, in the face of a stronger Christmas for the sector, according to data collected by the means of payment company Cielo and released this Monday (17). ).
The result in December, the second consecutive month of increase in the Cielo do Varejo Ampliado Index (ICVA), was also influenced by calendar issues, including an extra Friday, the day of strongest movement, according to the company.
Cielo had already announced at the end of December that retail sales at Christmas advanced 11.1% year-on-year, driven by online retail.
“Evaluating the behavior of retail in 2021, there was a growth of 0.8%, although we are still at a sales level 13.3% below the one observed in 2019”, says Pedro Lippi, head of intelligence at Cielo, in a statement. The service sector recorded the biggest increase in the year, 6.8%.
ICVA is calculated from 1.3 million retailers in the country accredited by Cielo and distributed across 18 sectors.
