Retail sales grow 5.9% in June, sector indicator shows

Brazilian retail sales increased by 5.9% in June compared to the same period in 2021, discounted for inflation, according to data from the means of payment company Cielo released this Monday (18).

The advance is related to the comparative base of June last year, a period affected by restrictions on the operation of trade due to Covid-19, Cielo said in a statement.

Calendar effects had little impact on the month’s results, according to the company.

“Eliminating the effects of price increases in the period, retail is still below the level observed in 2019, the year before the beginning of the pandemic,” said Diego Adorno, data products manager at Cielo, in the statement.

The Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA) is calculated from 1.1 million retailers in the country accredited to the company and distributed across 18 sectors.
