Retail sales improve expectations and grow 5.4% in March, their biggest increase in nine months

The UK retail sales grew 5.4% monthly in March, improving on the expected 1.5% increase and the 2.2% increase in February (revised from 2.1%). This is the highest rise recorded by the indicator since last June.

The annual indicator has grown by 7.2%, surpassing the expected 3.5% and the previous -3.6% (revised from -3.7%), registering its highest increase since October 2016.

Excluding fuel, retail sales are up 4.9% monthly, improving from 2.5% in February and the estimated 1.9%. Year-on-year, the indicator has increased 7.9% compared to the 4.5% consensus and -1% previously.
