Retail sales in Brazil rise 6.9% in May, indicator shows

Brazilian retail sales had their seventh consecutive high in May, with a growth of 6.9% compared to the same period in 2021, discounted for inflation, according to data from the means of payment company Cielo released this Tuesday (14).

Despite the increase, related to the comparative base of May last year, a period affected by restrictions on the operation of commerce thanks to Covid-19, this performance represents a strong deceleration compared to April, when there was an increase of 20.5%, explained by effects of calendar.

“Trade in May of last year, the object of the comparison, suffered less from restrictions than in April 2021,” explained Cielo’s data product manager, Diego Adorno, in a note.

He added that, excluding inflation, retail has not yet returned to the level seen before the pandemic.

In May of this year, there was one more Tuesday, a day with less movement in trade, and one less Saturday, the day when sales are usually stronger, compared to the same month in 2021.

The Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA) is calculated from 1.1 million retailers in the country accredited to the company and distributed across 18 sectors.
