Retail sales rise 0.6% in November with Black Friday weaker, says IBGE

Sales in the Brazilian retail trade rose 0.6% in November, compared to the previous month, when they had registered a slight increase of 0.2%.

The number came in slightly better than market expectations, which pointed to a drop of 0.2%.

“Although they came in better than estimated, the numbers are in line with the more general scenario for 2022 where the already very low levels avoid more intense drops and even some improvement in the margin”, says Necton’s chief economist, André Perfeito , in note.

More than half of the activities had a negative result in the period, said the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Friday (14).

In the year, retail accumulates a high of 1.9% and in the last twelve months, also growth of 1.9%.

“What we saw was a much less intense Black Friday, in terms of sales volume, than in 2020, when this period of promotions was better, especially for the largest retail chains”, analyzes the research manager, Cristiano Santos. .

Of the eight activities considered by the survey, five had negative rates in November. “Nevertheless, retail advanced, mainly driven by the growth of hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.9%)”, says the IBGE.

The Institute also highlights the advance of pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, perfumery and cosmetic articles (1.2%) and other articles for personal and domestic use (2.2%).

On the side of declines, one of the highlights was sales of furniture and home appliances, which dropped 2.3% in November, as well as textiles, apparel and footwear (-1.9%), fuels and lubricants (-1.4%). and books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.4%).

Office, IT and communication equipment and supplies changed -0.1%, indicating stability.

The data released this morning is added to that of services, released the day before. The sector advanced 1.6% in November, a positive surprise for analysts.

In expanded trade, which includes the activities of vehicles, motorcycles, and construction material, there was growth of 0.5% in the month.

According to the IBGE, the increase was influenced by the positive rates of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (0.7%) and construction material (0.8%), after the negative results of the previous month, -0.4% and -0.8%, respectively.
