Mexican retail chain Grupo Elektra has outsourced the processing of crypto payments to operator Athena Bitcoin Global to ensure fast transactions.
Grupo Elektra has over 1,300 sales outlets in Mexico and Latin America. In December 2021, the company became the first Mexican retailer to accept bitcoin.
Mexican billionaire and owner of the Grupo Elektra network, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, said that his company will soon add support for the Lightning Network to accept Bitcoin payments.
Grupo Elektra has chosen Athena Bitcoin Global as its cryptocurrency payment processor, as it is one of the largest manufacturers of crypto ATMs and an operator of personalized trading services provided in the over-the-counter market (OTS) in cryptocurrencies.
Athena Bitcoin will provide Grupo Elektra with a fiat crypto bridge that guarantees processing and liquidity in accordance with national regulations, enabling instant Lightning Network payments.
In early 2022, Athena Bitcoin Global sued former CTO Shaun Overton and president of ATM software development company ROI Developers, accusing him of sabotaging business relations with the El Salvadoran government and failing the country’s ATM installation program.
