After an election made by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts, “Retratos Fantasmas” was chosen this Tuesday morning (12) to represent Brazil in the dispute for a place in the Best International Film category at the 96th Oscar in 2024.
The film, directed by Pernambuco filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, competed with “Vultures” by Claudio Borrelli, “Alien Nights” by Sergio Carvalho, “Toll “, by Carolina Markowicz, “Strange Way “, by Guto Parente, and “Our Dream – The story of Claudinho and Buchecha “, by Eduardo Albergaria.
“It was a democratic meeting, representative of a broad commission. The diversity and quality of the films led us to three hours of debate until we arrived at the chosen title”, stated Ilda Santiago, president of the Selection Committee responsible for the choice.
“Retratos Fantasmas” was shown in May this year at the Cannes Film Festival, during the Special Sessions show, and received a standing ovation from the audience.
Produced by Cinemascope Produções, co-produced and nationally distributed by Vitrine Filmes, “Retratos Fantasmas” brings together seven years of work and research, filming and editing in the quest to get to know the center of Recife in the 20th century. This story is told from the living rooms of cinema that moved the population of Recife and dictated behavior.
