While clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces continue, Russia has indicated a de-escalation of tensions in regions close to Ukraine’s capital. In an interview with CNN This Sunday (10), Vicente Ferraro, a political scientist and researcher at the University of São Paulo (USP), stated that the reorganization may indicate a step towards an agreement.
“The retreat from the capital is a possible signal from Russia towards an agreement. Once the capital is no longer besieged and attacked with more emphasis, this could indicate a signal that Russia no longer intends to overthrow the Ukrainian government,” he explained.
So far, the various meetings between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations have not resulted in any significant progress towards peace. Still, the political scientist assesses the importance of reaching an agreement.
“The most effective way this war could make any headway would be some kind of agreement involving the West and Ukraine. Something that would fulfill some Russian demand, like the recognition of Ukraine’s neutrality, the recognition that Ukraine is not going to join NATO.”
In this new moment of the war, Ferraro analyzes that the conflict should intensify in the eastern region of the country, where the separatist and pro-Russia provinces are located. Even today, local authorities accused Russian forces of an attack in regions near the east and south of Ukraine, which resulted in the destruction of an airport.
“What we can expect, that there is some recent evidence, is that there is an attempt to expand the area of control of the separatists. Because the separatists don’t control the whole of Donbass. There is a part of Donbass, namely Donetsk and Luhansk, which is still controlled by the government of Ukraine,” he said.
