Retrospective 2024: remember five international clips that marked the year

Although music video culture has lost strength in recent years, 2024 was still able to deliver to the music world some examples capable of captivating the audience and marking their names in the history of the genre.

Using references to the world of cinema, with emphasis on the films “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, “Dead Poets Society” and “Poor Creatures”, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande represented already established names in pop with “Fortnight ” (with Post Malone) and “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)”, respectively.

There was also space left for the names that rose within the genre in 2024 and made this their year, such as Charli XCX — who joins Billie Eilish in a shower of panties in “Guess” — and Sabrina Carpenter — who was inspired by her life personal and horror classics to make “Taste”.

Remember below five clips that marked the year 2024:

“we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” — Ariana Grande

In the video, Ariana Grande stars with her boyfriend, the actor Evan Peters (“Dahmer: An American Cannibal”), with scenes that show references to the film “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, released in 2004.

The story revolves around the character Peaches, who looks for a clinic that erases the memories of the beloved .

In the clip, several romance scenes are shown in which the ex-love (Evan) is erased and replaced by a dog, for example. In the end, Peaches (Ariana) leaves and passes him on the street, without recognizing him.

“Taste” — Sabrina Carpenter

In production directed by Dave Meyers the North American appeared alongside the actress Jenna Ortega reliving scenes from classic horror productions such as “Psycho”, “Death Feels Good” and “Pânico”.

The clip also makes references to the series “Scream Queens”, a satire of horror films in the slasher style.

Following the lyrics of the song, which was released in the early hours of this Friday, as well as the album, Sabrina talks about her boyfriend getting involved with his ex during their relationship.

“I heard you guys got back together and if that’s true/You’re going to have to taste me when he kisses you/If you want forever, I bet you do/Just know you’re going to taste me too,” he says. the lyrics of the song.

In the clip, Sabrina and Jenna try to kill each other and engage in a dispute that arose because the “Wandinha” star is with the man Sabrina is in love with.

Rumors suggest that the clip is, in fact, a hint to Shawn Mendes, who confessed, in an interview with John Mayer, that he got back together with his ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello just two days after hooking up with Sabrina Carpenter.

“Fortnight” — Taylor Swift and Post Malone

In the clip, Taylor and Post appear to have a troubled relationship, putting the singer, at one point, in a shock chair. The actor Josh Charles is also seen alongside Ethan Hawke. Both participated in the film “Dead Poets Society”. In the video, there are references to the film “Poor Creatures”, which won four awards at this year’s Oscars: Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Production Design, Best Hair and Makeup and Best Costume Design.

The partnership between Taylor Swift and Post Malone was the first song released from an album with 31. In addition to the singer, the artist also collaborated with Florence + The Machine on the new project.

“Guess” — Charli XCX and Billie Eilish

After conquering the world with “Brat”, Charli XCX released a remix version of the album and collaborated with Billie Eilish to give a new look to the song “Guess”.

The clip features Billie Eilish invading Charli XCX’s party with a truck, and then the two roll around in various pieces of underwear. The record is directed by Aidan Zamiri.

“Not Like Us” — Kendrick Lamar

“Not Like Us” is the culmination of a long public fight between Kendrick Lamar and Drake and is classified as a “diss track”, a type of track that is common in rap, when a rapper wants to publicly criticize and offend another.

In the images from the video, Kendrick Lamar appears destroying an owl-shaped piñata animal symbol of OVO, Drake’s umbrella brand which brings together a record label and a clothing brand. The clip also shows an ironic warning: “No OVO bitches were harmed during the recording of this video” (in free translation), and shows images of Kendrick’s family together.

The presence of Whitney Alford, the rapper’s fiancée, and the couple’s children provide a direct response to the lines contained in the song “Family Matters”, in which Drake accuses his enemy of infidelity.

Billie Eilish criticizes exposure of her sexuality: “Who cares?”
