Brazil’s return to the Global Compact for Safe Migration is “extremely important”, according to Unicamp professor of International Law Luiz Renato Vedovato.

THE CNN Radio he explained that the country has more Brazilians outside Brazil, around 4 million, than migrants of other nationalities living here.

“Brazil is not a destination country, today it is a transit country, it is not very desirable and these people come here because they have no other alternative.”

In this way, from the moment you are in the pact that discusses protection, “it protects more Brazilians who are outside the country than migrants inside.”

“The protection of this population is important, Brazil being at the negotiating table to debate with other countries will protect the Brazilian who is outside.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicated the resumption to the United Nations last Thursday (5).

Vedovato highlighted that the agreement seeks “to cooperate in this international mobility so that public policies are built that dialogue with each other and are coordinated above nations, to avoid violations of rights.”

The professor recalls that the world is going through a moment of “great movement of people who are forced to leave their countries of origin, due to weather or war, for example.”

They are also covered by the pact, although “sovereignty remains with each country.”

In Luiz Renato’s assessment, Brazil has advanced legislation regarding the reception of migrants and refugees, but he made the reservation that there is still a need to create a “national immigration and refuge policy”, as provided for in the law.
