Return of the X in Brazil: will those who left under lockdown return? Users are divided

THE return of X, formerly Twitter, took place this Tuesday (8) with the determination of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to unblock after 39 days without the social network in Brazil .

During this period, similar platforms received some of the users who sought a similar platform to the suspended one.

With the return of Elon Musk’s system, internet users were divided on whether or not to return to X, for reasons ranging from the spread of fake news to the lack of privacy in accounts.

THE CNN interviewed users who are deciding whether to go to the social network, see some cases .

The impossibility of using the X platform brought some issues to light, such as the large number of bots — automated accounts —, the dissemination of fake news and the deficient nudity filter, which interfere with internet users’ decisions about which system to choose.

“I think that [o X] It’s a very good social network for information, I followed a lot of news profiles, of the most varied things there, however, it also has a lot of sexist and homophobic content […] and the company did very little or nothing to combat this” commented Heloiza Melo, 31, marketing manager.

For Dario de Moraes, 23, a music student, the suspension had positive effects. “My mental health has improved a lot without the episodes of comparison and direct conflicts,” he told CNN .

Migration to other social networks

Many users migrated their accounts to Bluesky, a platform that has Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, as one of its founders.

In the seven days after the suspension of CNN .

For Adryelle Calmon, 21, an advertising professional, the change was quick. “I downloaded Bluesky not even a week after X was suspended and used it in a similar way. I thought it was good, but it was empty because not everyone migrated.”

With the large number of users joining the platform, which had different functionalities from the old Twitter, the company had to offer quick solutions to make internet users comfortable on the social network.

To adapt, Bluesky worked to appoint a legal representative in Brazil — as required by local legislation for the maintenance of the social network —, implemented tools such as video publishing and announced that it would create a trending topic similar to X.

Threads, a social network from the company Meta, also a competitor to Elon Musk’s system, was disregarded by some users. Dario said he didn’t use it because it was “integrated with Instagram and Facebook, which puts me off a lot, since X provided a certain anonymity and a very unique way of working that doesn’t happen on these other networks.”

Still, even with these replacement options for the system at the time of suspension, other users chose not to migrate because they considered the possibility of Minister Alexandre de Moraes going back.

Thalles Fernandes, 26, aerospace engineer, commented that “it was a mix of laziness and hope when the old Twitter came back”. He said that he even tried to use other platforms, but revealed that “the social networks that I used in the meantime did not fill the void that X left.”

The return of X?

“I don’t intend to return anyway, I’m adopting other alternatives to have quick access to the news there, which was my main focus”, said Heloiza.

The return of the platform in Brazil may not work as expected. With the absence of the social network in the country for 39 days, some users saw that alternatives would make up for the shortages reported about X.

In this regard, internet users are divided between returning to “tweeting” in a hurry or thinking about being on other platforms considered better.

“I don’t intend to uninstall Bluesky for now, but I will watch the network migration movement. In fact, I wouldn’t like to go back to

For Adryelle, however, the migration back to X will be quick. “I intend to delete [o Bluesky] because everything I consume goes on Twitter again.”

Thalles, who was waiting for the suspension from the social network to end, intends to “return as soon as possible and I hope that other people will return too.”
