Astronauts returning from the International Space Station (ISS) to Earth may have aerobic deficits, muscle strength, power, resistance, balance, agility, coordination, orthostatic tolerances, proprioception, neuro university function and flexibility, according to a study published by NASA. This is due to life in microgravity.
Once they reach the ground, they should undergo an immediate medical evaluation with a flight surgeon – a standard procedure for astronauts that complete long -term missions, according to the agency.
Since 2001, experts in astronaut’s strength, conditioning and rehabilitation (ASCR) have managed a reconditioning program, focusing on all deficits, which seeks to improve the physical condition of all ISS returning scientists.

Rehabilitation involves a series of physical exercises to increase bone density and strengthen muscles. They also do cardiovascular exercises to strengthen the heart muscle, as astronauts no longer have to pump as strongly in zero gravity as on Earth. In addition, there are exercises to improve coordination and help prevent injuries.
The program is given specific attention to the general condition of each astronaut, the results of the tests, the medical state and the tasks attributed after the mission. Astronauts may return to their houses after the authorization of a doctor.
