Reuters: Biden Tells Erdogan He Will Recognize Armenian Genocide

US President Joe Biden told his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a telephone conversation today that he intended to recognize the massacres and forced deportations of Armenians in 1915.

This information was transmitted by Reuters, citing sources who are aware of the discussion between the two leaders.

Earlier, the US State Department today referred to a “statement” expected tomorrow, Saturday, on the “Armenian Genocide”, indicating that it confirms that US President Joe Biden is preparing to recognize it.

“As for the Armenian Genocide, you can expect an announcement tomorrow,” US Deputy Foreign Minister Jalina Porter told reporters. Until now, the US government has refrained from talking about genocide.

The Armenian Genocide, recognized by more than twenty countries and many historians, is being challenged by Turkey.

Turkish presidency for leaders’ conversation

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his US counterpart Joe Biden agreed in a telephone conversation today to improve co-operation between the two NATO allies, the Turkish presidency said.

Earlier, the White House said that the two leaders, in their first direct contact, agreed to meet on the sidelines of the NATO summit in June.

“The two leaders agreed on the strategic nature of the bilateral relationship and that it is important to work together to build greater co-operation on issues of mutual interest,” the Turkish presidency said in a statement.
