Reuters calls on Israel to conduct ‘swift and transparent’ investigation into journalist’s death

Reuters asked the Israeli authorities to conduct “rapid, thorough and transparent research” on the death of the journalist of Issam Abdullah on October 13, during an attack in southern Lebanon, on the border with Israel. “I repeat my appeal to the Israeli authorities, who have stated that they are investigating, for to conduct a swift, thorough and transparent investigation into what happened“, said the director of Reuters, Alessandra Galloni, in a video made public yesterday, Monday, evening.

“By transparent I mean an investigation with evidence and clear explanations,” he added.

“I also asked the Lebanonwho said he has gathered evidence about the attack, and from any other authority that has information to provide it,” continued Alessandra Galloni.

The attack, in which Issam Abdullah was killed and six other journalists were injured, including two from Agence France-Presse (AFP), took place in southern Lebanon, on the border with Israel.

From the beginning of the war between Israel and Gauze, which erupted on October 7 with an unprecedented attack by Hamas, the zone is the scene of firefights between the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Israeli army and attempts to infiltrate Israel from Lebanon. Today the Israeli army announced that it had killed four attackers who tried to infiltrate into Israeli territory through this border.

Issam Abdullah died after he was “hit by a shell while filming the firefight between Israel and Lebanon,” explained the director of Reuters, a London-based agency owned by the Canadian media and services group Thomson Reuters. “Eyewitnesses said the shell that killed Isham came from Israel.”

Alessandra Galloni called on “all parties” involved in the conflict to “respect all media” and “work” with them “to guarantee the safety of journalists”. Issam Abdallah, 37, was “an experienced, talented and passionate journalist,” she said. “He was just doing his job when he was killed.” On Saturday, AFP had called on Israel and Lebanon to conduct “an in-depth investigation” into the attack on the journalists. “It is critical that every effort be made to establish how a group of journalists, who they were clearly identified as journalists and they were officially accredited,” said Agence France-Presse president and chief executive Fabrice Fries.

The Lebanese army accused Israel of being responsible for the shooting. For its part, the Israeli army said it was “deeply sorry” for the death of Issam Abdullah, without explicitly admitting its responsibility, and added that it was trying to “verify” the circumstances.
